Sound Devastation have reviewed the EP.

Note: This review is not exactly the same as the one in the hotmail account, that was an unedited one sent by mistake!

EvenFlowersKill – Split Lips and Cocktails
Running Time – 20:14
(Self Released)

Macabre Party Progress
Last Dance At The 54
High Times And The City Lights
Red Hot Travoltas

EvenFlowersKill are yet another odd band to cross SD Towers threshold. I’ve not heard much stuff before this EP, apart from the odd mp3, yet they’ve been in my ‘metal conscious’ since my love for heavy alternative music began. Quickly moving from Linkin Park (shhh) to Earthtone9 (mmmm), once my little toes were immersed in the UK underground scene for a short time EvenFlowersKill were one of the first to come under my musical radar almost at random, pretty much simply because of the attraction of the odd name. To be honest their old material was pretty dire (as was the website Christoph!) but those days are long past and with a self financed album already under their belts and a new guitarist in tow they once again bring their zany, fun loving metal come soul come dance come rock come whateverthefuckelse again, with this EP entitled ‘Split Lips and Cocktails’.

‘Macabre Party Progress’ kicks things off with some jazz stylings and just immediately makes you want to get up and dance (properly you hardcore kids out there). Definitely one of the objectives of this EP is to throw the rule book out, party and sound pretty damn good at the same time. Which EvenFlowersKill do on a regular basis on this 20 minutes plus EP. The vocals might not be to everybody’s taste, a rasping growl which still manages to sound like the voice, life and indeed soul of the party. It’s the unexpected mix of this at times chaotic yet sonically pleasing instrumentation, coupled with this odd vocal style (sometimes ‘gang vocals’) and at times thundering drums and/or evil riffs that catch the listener off guard. It’s a joy for anybody who has to listen to tonnes of repetitive music all the time – EvenFlowersKill don’t break barriers they dance right over them. However, whether the band would be picked off the shelf in a record store is another matter.

It would admittedly be hard to market these guys to any type of ‘mass market’ due to them being “out there”, and that doesn’t win the popularity stakes at head offices of labels. ‘Last Dance at the 54’ is a heavier number with some riffs that sound decidedly evil and the dance floor disappears in the blink of an eye. It’s Christoph’s drumming that usually marks the in styles in EFK’s music. This track touches to melodicy for brief moments before crushing back in with punishing vocals and the now familiar gang vocals.

‘High Times and The City Lights’ is a true infusion of influences with guitars all soul one moment and chugging out some pure metal magic the next moment. It features some ‘proper’ singing but after what has previously gone before this itself almost sounds out of place. There’s a lot of ideas and influences being mashed together, and in this track there’s so much going on that perhaps the glue that has stuck the others on the EP together ran out in the writing process when this was done, because it doesn’t quite hang together as cohesively as the others.

‘Red Hot Travoltas’ finishes off proceedings on the CD, and shows EvenFlowersKill in full flow and in fine form. Opening with a less immediate start that the others the track wanders on and sounds more controlled in its direction that the song before. Altogether EvenFlowersKill have produced a strong EP, the first two songs being the better of the four. Hopefully with even more time, and now with a new creative spirit in the form of Ryan, the styles can merge even more, and with that day EFK will become a favourite with many a fan across the UK.
